First Osprey pack!

5

This was my first Osprey pack and I fell in love! I purchased this one last Spring.I had tried on many different brands of packs, including Osprey and had almost given up because I couldn't find a good fit, that is, until I stumbled upon the Kyte 46. Wow! Finally a comfortable fit! I really have no cons...although adding a floating lid would make this bag perfect. I took this pack fully loaded on 4 domestic Southwest Airlines flights with no problems. It fit in the overhead bin just fine. I bought an Airporter just in case I would have to check it, but I never did. The organization and features of this pack are phenomenal. It was everything I wanted in a pack without having to go up in Liters to get similar features. I've enjoyed using it on a couple of camping/hiking trips as well. I like Osprey so much that I purchased the tempest 20 also and am currently looking into the Skimmer 30. One can never have too many packs ;)

Perfect for travel

I've been travelling in the Philippines for 7weeks with this pack and I'm very satisfied! I've used the pack to travel but also for extended hike woth heavy loads and it's always very comfortable. I feel like the pack is very durable and still looks new after 7weeks of continuous use (apart from the dirt sometimes). Love the sode mesh pockets for easy access to water bottles or sunscreen. I use the front mesh pocket for wet gear/bathing suit.

Pretty good except for water bottles

I'm a New Mexican hiker and cart a lot of water around in this thing when I'm out in the desert. I'm a fairly small-built woman so the capacity of the bag is usually enough to carry all my food and clothing. Since I sometimes use this pack for overnighting (or multi-nighting), I use my water bladder in the back pocket and use both side meshes for water bottles. In a typical day I can go through the entirety of my water bladder and end up needing to reach for my water bottles on the side of the pack. The pack isn't built for this, or at least it isn't built for short arms doing this. I have to use the buddy system to get my water out and to put it back in the mesh side pockets. The pockets are tight enough that they snap completely closed when nothing is in them, making it impossible for me to wedge my water bottles back in. Since there are a number of buckles holding it in place and the pack is fairly heavy, it's impractical to keep taking it on and off just to grab and replace a water bottle. The bag is phenomenal other than this, but it's the quality of life stuff that really nags at you after a while.

Great weekend warrior

Pros- This pack is a great buy. I work in wilderness therapy and this is my go to pack whenever I'm going camping/hiking recreationally. It fits more than enough stuff and has lots of places to hook on extras. It could be used for a week long trip too. Cons- please add a floating top lid to this pack. This back borders the hiking/technical pack attributes and a floating top lid would be so much more functional. All Osprey side pockets are not well designed. Angles pockets towards the user would be fantastic. Gregory makes pockets like this and it's a breeze taking stuff out without breaking your arm.

Great pack for a UL thru hike

5

I love this pack! I used it for my 2016 PCT thru and it held up great the entire trip. The whole hike I was super jealous of my boyfriends Exos suspension but otherwise this pack was great! It's pretty light and i love how easily accessible to pockets are, I didn't have to sit down and go threw my pack to get little things like sunscreen or a headlamp. I never used the separate compartment for a sleeping bag, you can unhook the separator if that's not your style. All around great pack if you're a minimalist! If not, space might be a bit tight. If you're thinking about using this pack for a thru hike 2 SmartWater liters fit (snuggly) in each side pocket!

Excellent Backpack

This product is amaking! It's my first backpack from osprey and I am in love with it! I recommend it for anyone who's always travelling from college to home, weekend get aways or camping. I will be using it in the near future for long term travel with Friends! 46 liters is perfect for me since I can carry 25 TO 40 lbs of clothing, school study items and my 32 oz water bottle.

try an airporter cover or duffel bag cover for flights

Sorry I'm writing this "review" in lieu of the ability to add a comment to a review. Osprey makes shell bags that backpacks can go into. The airporter bag has just one zipper and you can use a regular TSA approved lock on that. We used a more generic duffel bag with the same result just poorer fit. We realized we were going to have that non-lockable, all-these-open-pockets issue on a plane, too.

It is ok.

I haven't been able to use this backpack at all because majority of the time I will be going on a plane to get somewhere, and I can't take this backpack on a plane, because it can't be locked. I would be using this a lot more if it was able to be locked which it might be. I still can't figure out how to lock it though I have tried so many ways it just doesn't work.

My do everything backpack

The Kyte is by far my favorite backpacking pack at Osprey because it is a quiver of one for me. I use this pack from everything from week long backpacking trips to climbing in the desert. The 46L is large enough since I tend to have minimal gear for backpacking. And I love the durability and side access for big days and heavy loads while climbing at Indian Creek. It's the perfect blend between lightweight yet durable. I am also 5'10" around 145 lb and find it difficult for backpacks to fit me properly. Osprey's highly adjustable torso lengths are a huge gold star in my book and the Kyte S/M which is the larger of the two sizes fits me like a glove.
