International Carry-on vs. US Carry-On

International carry-on size restrictions can be notoriously challenging since so much of the restrictions are determined by where you are traveling. Here's a breakdown on just what to look for with your next trip.

Outside of the U.S. the standard carry-on baggage size is smaller (this relates to flights originating outside the U.S. and with a destination outside the U.S.) Here, the rule of thumb is about 21", and not the 22" and above carry-on size. As with any rule, exceptions abound and it is a good idea to visit the site of all of the carriers you plan to use while abroad to get a consensus. If you travel outside the U.S. on a regular basis or are looking to purchase a bag for someone who does, you might want to consider replacing the standard domestic sized carry-on bag in your set with an international carry-on sized bag. In terms of what the two bags will actually hold the difference is not that great and it may add some flexibility in your travels.

Best bag for the working traveller hands down!

I travel internationally as a medevac flight nurse on a medically configured jet. I am gone for 8-20 days at a time away from home. For many years I have used this and other Osprey bags exclusively, including the Manta, Elroy, and Sojourn. This bag is expandable, has multiple pockets to store my electronics, toiletries, shoes, medical gear, flight suits, and personal clothing. This has become my go to bag as I live out of it over 240 days a year. The size is perfect as a carry-on, the handle has never failed, the material is strong and durable, the wheels are tough as nails, and it looks great. The zip off backpack is great for day excursions, and carries quite a bit as well. I have used the bag as a backpack on rough terrain, and the suspension system is comfortable. And it can be removed to make room for other items.I've seen baggage handlers throw this bag around and it just keeps working. Best money I've ever spent. I am trying to give a well rounded review, but I haven't found any negative aspects to this bag. Bonus: Peace of mind with the any bag any era any problem warranty. You will not be disappointed.

Where's the hip belt??

What happened to the hip belt? Osprey makes high quality products. The earlier version had the full harness, hip belt and should straps. Now the Meridian has only shoulder straps. ALL weight is carried on the shoulders. A 20 lb load gets quite uncomfortable within a few minutes. I realize the pack is designed as a roller bag that can be carried as a backpack. The design is great for getting on/off trains and buses, grossly uneven cobblestone streets, avoiding muddy areas, etc. However, I can only tolerate carrying the pack short distances. Please put the hip belt on the Meridian.

Best rollerbag and backpack ever

Very heavy international traveler. Use the backpack daily and rollerbag weekly for past 3 years; both have held up extremely well and are an outstanding value compared to previously needing to replace bags every 18 months.

no more hip belt

Very disappointed that the hip belt was removed in 2016 model. The wheels will now be rubbing on the clothing

Perfect bag!

I love how easy it rolls thru different terrains, and that is can also be used as a pack for more epic travel use. Very travel friendly.

Great carry on size pack with removable harness

I have been on three three week summer trips to Europe with this pack as well as overseas business trips. You really don't need that many clothes if you wash them once a week. Great pack. The first version I bought the handle ripped apart so they sent me this one, the latest. The handle screws will work themselves loose so go to your local auto parts store and buy some thread locking liquid. Hoepfully, this will solve the problem. Two other issues, one, the wheels are not that far apart so if you don't have the handle low enough the pack will tip to the side and you have to stop and right it. It would be better if the wheels telescoped out for stability. The second issue is, I am 6' 3" and the handle is not quite long enough. Three more inches would help. Other than that, highly recommend this good quality pack.

LOVE this bag!

I can pack everything I need for a week long international trip w/o checking. It's perfect. It holds up well, and easy to travel with. My favorite bag!

Very practical and durable

I've traveled worldwide with this bag and it's been great. I can carry it on the plane or check it if I want. The bag has been through all sorts of conditions. I love that it has a lifetime guarantee also.

I have been a business traveller since 1984. This is the best luggage I have ever owned. Has literally been around the world from east to west 3 times and north to south once with lots of in between trips. Auto, air, boat, and even day packing. Longest hike with the entire pack and other gear 3 miles and 100 vertical feet change. I wouldn't take it on a longer hike because my hips don't fit between the wheels well. The day pack is really fine. I keep two computers and business equipment in the day pack and clothes etc in the base unit. Luggage handlers really aren't kind to luggage and it took 40 flight legs and three times as many road hours before they managed to tear off a part. Still didn't lose contents integrity and protection. Honestly, this is real quality gear. The only criticism that I have is that the screws that hold the telescoping handle on are perpetually working lose. Funny stories with HSA inspections and tiny screw drivers and a few tense moments. Almost worth the fuss for the stories. This is a great combo and I recommend it very highly.

Was good until the Handle fell apart

I have enjoyed all the compartments on this carry on Back Pack with Wheels, BUT The handle is poorly constructed and the weak aspect to this excellent Back Pack. It is heavy and we are only allowed 23 lbs. to the weight of the unit makes packing a nightmare. The rest of the pack is still good. I want to repair it not throw it away. Expensive at over $375 with tax.
