BCM is headquartered in Colorado’s Front Range and has regional hubs on both coasts and several locations in between. We work in communities on the ancestral territories the Ute and Arapahoe, (Denver, CO), the Sioux and Anishinibawaki (Minneapolis, MN), the Ohlone, Ramaytush, Chochenyo, and Muwekma (San Francisco Bay Area), the Duwamish (Seattle, WA), the Massachusett and Pawtucket (Boston, MA), and the Muscogee Creek and Shawnee (Birmingham, AL).
Big City Mountaineers has been providing outdoor experiences for youth from disinvested communities for 35 years! The youth we serve have faced increased barriers to outdoor access and are demographically underrepresented in outdoor spaces. BCM is here to change that. Since 1990, BCM has provided over 45,000 nights under the stars to over 11,000 youth who might not have otherwise had such an opportunity.
We provide free, fully outfitted, and professionally led outdoor experiences for 12- to 18-year-olds across the country. BCM’s programming begins with accessible day experiences, progresses to frontcountry overnights, and culminates in a weeklong backcountry trip. This is often the first time our youth participants experience remote wilderness. In so doing, BCM creates opportunities for youth to connect with nature, strengthen skills, improve mental and physical health, enhance social-emotional well being, and become more engaged stewards of our planet.
BCM is at an exciting point in its history, one that holds great potential and opportunity. In 2023, BCM successfully piloted a new Leaders program(Opens in a new window) designed to encourage our most engaged youth participants to expand their outdoor leadership skills and have more direct access to future careers in the outdoor recreation economy. In 2024, BCM will be opening a new region of service in Birmingham, AL(Opens in a new window). This represents BCM’s first regional presence in the Southeast.
About Adventure for Someone and Summit for Someone
Many of us experience the wonder and sense of well-being associated with time spent in nature. And for nearly two decades, BCM’s Summit for Someone (SFS) program has supported our mission to provide transformative outdoor experiences for youth by mobilizing outdoor enthusiasts in adventure-based fundraising campaigns. In our SFS campaign, you fundraise a specific amount for BCM and we book YOU on a guided summit of a major peak! Think Mt. Hood, Grand Teton, Mt. Whitney…Interested? Email Linnea today!
Adventure for Someone (AFS)(Opens in a new window) is the more personalized counterpart to SFS. AFS is a fully customizable opportunity to combine any outdoor activity with a fundraising goal of any amount.
Holding your own or donating to an existing Adventure for Someone campaign(Opens in a new window) is an opportunity to harness your passions for the outdoors to extend the benefits of nature to today’s generation of young people, particularly those who face increased and systemic barriers to equitable access. 100% of proceeds support Big City Mountaineers’ youth programs.
Anyone who is passionate about both their personal relationship with the outdoors and sharing those associated benefits with others can do an AFS. The steps are simple:
- Pick an adventure: Could be something as ambitious as a thru-hike or something as local as walking every street in your neighborhood. Really, anything goes!
- Choose a fundraising goal: You will be working with your community to raise funds for BCM through your adventure! So pick an amount that feels attainable and meaningful to you. There is no minimum contribution!
- Engage your community: We will help you set up a campaign page that you can share with your community. This is where they will read your story, hear your why, see updates, and donate!
- Choose your incentives!(Opens in a new window) Both campaigners and donors have the opportunity to choose from various incentives. The top incentive level enables AFSers to join a guided trip that only our traditional SFS experiences have previously been able to access. At lower levels of fundraising, incentives include top of the line outdoor gear, including backpacks from Osprey.
BCM’s 2024 AFS season will be kicking off in January, and we are very excited to announce all the gear and experience incentives available to AFS campaigners and donors. We hope you choose to join us and make your next 2024 outdoor adventure an Adventure for Someone. Questions? Email Linnea today(Opens in a new window)!
