Osprey’s Farpoint 40 is perfect for a weekend getaway in the city or the wilderness. The LightWire™ frame suspension transfers the load from harness to hipbelt. A mesh backpanel improves ventilation and the mesh on the harness and hipbelt reduces chafing under load. The entire suspension stows away under a zippered panel creating a sleek silhouette for transport.
Unzip the lockable sliders to access the main compartment. Inside there’s a mesh pocket for small items. Dual compression straps keep cargo from shifting during transit.
Outside you’ll find a zippered front panel slash pocket to keep you organized and sewn attachment points to lash on extra gear. No matter how much you choose to carry, StraightJacket™ compression straps stabilize the load. The padded top and side handles give you purchase when you need to toss the Farpoint 40 into the back of the bus.
Whether traveling near or far, a comfortable pack means one less headache. We use decades of experience to ensure a comfortable, gender-specific fit for every adventure.

I was looking for a travel backpack for some time, first was looking for wheeled backpacks but found it kind of not being practical for me, i do quiet a bit of business and leisure travel a year (5-8 times) and well aware of a good backpack or carry-on pros & cons.
finally i came to decide between this backpack and eagle creek 40 liter one and chose this, really like it.

Good but lack of updates over the years says look elsewhere
I use this for business travel for 5+ years. Great for carry-on in the USA can go overhead or under the seat even when full. I also use this to travel to China with 2 weeks of clothes (packing experts only). Comfortable for broad shoulders, but cannot remove/put away the hip belt when using the shoulder straps which gets in the way (must always fold them under after mounting the pack). The outside water bottle holders don't work for me when the pack is full. The metal frame is wonderful and is very comfortable on my back. The zippers have held up under stress, but they always feel subpar compared to my other packs with premium YKK zippers that seem to get better with use.
Overall I recommend this pack for airline travel, but the fact Osprey has not updated this pack over the years means I will pass on it when my current one wears out (starting to wear out now with material rips).
as close to perfection as gets
bought this as a little bro to the Farpoint 70, which up to this point i thought was perfect except its non carry on size. But the Farpoint 40, coupled with packing cubes is all you'll ever need. and the fact its carry on sized adds another layer of peace of mind.
Very convenient for traveling
I have had this pack in grey for over a year now and used it on numerous short business trips within Europe as well as for day hikes and carrying the weekly shop home from the supermarket. It has fit the bill for all these tasks well. I selected this pack because it was one of the largest backpacks I knew I could bring as carry on with budget airlines (think Easyjet, etc.). I have flown with it at 15-20 times and never had any problems with it being too large for carry on size. I find it easy to pack for traveling or hiking. The small waterproof pouch is great for passport and liquids at the airport (no leaking!) and it is fairly secure once the straps are buckled across it. The zips are super sturdy. The one downside is that although the back is padded and somewhat aerated, you will still sweat if you're carrying this pack a long way or in warm weather - I suspect all packs would have this issue though. The pack still looks in good condition although it's been treated pretty hard while traveling and I've been using it daily for walk commuting for the past couple of months.
I am a 5'5" medium frame female (size 8) and purchased the size S/M which fits me well. I would definitely purchase this pack again.
Great travel pack
This is a really nice travel bag.. for warm climate travel it is perfect. Compartments are well thought out and roomy. I've taken this pack to Kauai and Mainland Mexico. Both were 7 day trips and I had plenty of room. Very comfortable to wear as a backpack and handles are great to carry as a suitcase. If in doubt by this pack quality is 5 Star.
Purchased the Farpoint 40 for a trip to Europe through five countries by plane and train. It's rugged; yet barely looks like it has been used. With packing cubes, I was able to organize and fit a lot in this bag. This is my 3rd Osprey bag and/or pack. All are well-constructed and very durable. Will continue to be a fan of Osprey products!
Love it but...
I got this pack to take across Europe on a 6 week backpacking trip. I love the way everything fits into, the fit, and the durability. My only suggestion for the company itself is to mix up the color schemes. I know this is a minut factor, but for me if I'm buying something at this price point that will be on my back daily, style is an added bonus! I think introducing new color schemes would be good for business!

I really want to love this bag - all positives have basically been said in other reviews so I won't repeat them. The major flaw for me were the mesh pockets; I found that they were very difficult to access while carrying the pack, and being that they were deep meant that smaller items could get lost easily. This was all the more annoying because of the severe lack of other outside pockets that could be accessed while wearing, so access travel documents, maps, passports, compass, snacks etc necessitated either removing the bag entirely or having to carry a second bag. The other issue I have is the size of the carry handles - they're unnecessarily bulky and heavy; it's a 40l pack, no one (unless you're a hopelessly bad packer) is really going to carry that much weight as to need such handles. They also take up room that could otherwise be used for a side or top pocket.
If neither of these things are an issue for you then I highly recommend the bag. It's well constructed, relatively lightweight and easy to pack.
Excellent travel pack
This pack was purchased for and will be used for travel only. It is a great carryon with backpack straps, a great combination.
Could have been better....
Love this backpack but it could definitely have been better. Missing in this backpack is an organizer for basic stuff like zip-pockets, card holder, travel documents, pen slots, key lanyard etc.. The pouch on the top has only one compartment and that makes it so messy. I am surprised that Osprey did not think of this....
