In October 2025, a group of determined climbers from around the world gathered at the base of Ecuador’s Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes on Earth. They came together not just to reach the summit, but to support a mission focused on restoring mobility, confidence, and independence for those who need it most. Climbing for ROMP(Se abre en una ventana nueva) is an initiative of the Range of Motion Project(Se abre en una ventana nueva) (ROMP), which works to provide access to high-quality prosthetic care for underserved communities worldwide.
For ROMP, climbing represents more than a physical challenge. The organization’s rallying cry, #WhatsYourMountain, captures the spirit of perseverance and purpose. It asks everyone involved to think about the personal “mountains” they face, whether physical, emotional, or social. The Cotopaxi expedition brought that metaphor to life through a real, demanding ascent that reflected the uphill battles faced every day by individuals living with limb loss and limited access to prosthetic care.
This year’s climb pushed every team member to their limits, both physically and mentally. Adaptive athletes, amputees, prosthetists, and allies from across the globe joined forces with one shared purpose: to show that mobility is a human right, not a privilege. From the first steps on Cotopaxi’s scree covered slopes to the final roped ascent over the glacier's icy snow, the team moved together. Every encouraging word, every shared breath in the thin mountain air, reminded them that progress happens through unity.
Reaching the summit of Cotopaxi, standing 19,347 feet (5,897 meters) tall, was no small achievement. The climb tested endurance, trust, and teamwork at every stage. When one climber slowed, another offered support. When altitude and exhaustion took hold, motivation came from remembering the reason they were there - to help make immobility a thing of the past. The journey was filled with laughter, shared meals, and moments of reflection under Ecuador’s wide, star-filled, and sometimes weather-filled skies.
As one climber shared afterward, “This is not and will never be about helping the weak. It's about giving strong people the tools to show the world what they are capable of.”
The physical summit was a powerful moment, but the true success came before the team even reached the top. After months of training, fundraising, and preparation, Climbing for ROMP 2025 exceeded its ambitious goal of $130,000 USD. The funds directly support prosthetic care and mobility services for people who otherwise would not have access. Each donation stood for a step toward equality, dignity, and movement.
The 2025 Cotopaxi expedition is a reminder that the greatest summits are not measured in altitude but in impact. For ROMP, every step on the mountain symbolizes a life changed through restored mobility. The campaign continues to motivate others to find their own mountains, to challenge limitations, build community, and make the world more accessible for all.
When we climb together, everyone rises.
