What Is It and
Why Does It Matter?
THE bluesign® SYSTEM
There may not be a single lab coat in our closets—more like tech tees and flannel—but chemistry plays a significant role in what we do, from dyes to durable water repellent (DWR) and beyond.
The bluesign® SYSTEM helps us promote, adopt and implement safe chemistry and responsible practices throughout our supply chain so we can be better stewards, from the resources we use to the people we encounter and the environments we recreate in.
For the fall 2024 season, 70% of our full product line is made up of bluesign® PRODUCTS

bluesign DESIGNATIONS
You’ll notice many of our products carry the bluesign® PRODUCT label, which meets bluesign’s strict environmental and worker safety standards throughout all elements of the product. In others, we’re using bluesign® APPROVED materials. Here’s the difference:
bluesign® APPROVED MATERIALS
- Textiles and components carrying the bluesign® APPROVED label meet the strict safety and environmental requirements of the bluesign® CRITERIA.
- Designed to keep harmful substances on the bluesign® SYSTEM SUBSTANCE LIST out of the manufacturing process at each step of the supply chain
- Ensures approved chemical products and raw materials are used throughout the value chain
- Guarantees a high level of consumer safety
- Promotes responsible use of resources
bluesign® PRODUCT
- Consumer products carrying the bluesign® PRODUCT label meet the strict safety and environmental requirements of the bluesign® CRITERIA, as a whole.
- These products are made of bluesign® APPROVED fabric and components and are produced in a resource-conserving way to lower the impact on people and the environment.
- A minimum of 90% bluesign® APPROVED fabrics/yarns
- A minimum of 20% bluesign® APPROVED components
- Any remaining fabrics, materials or components must come from a qualified supplier
- Manufacturing adheres to selected International Labour Organization standard
Shifting main body panels and liners to bluesign® APPROVED fabric was a key first step toward lessening our impact. Today, a vast majority of our products use bluesign® APPROVED fabric, disclosed on our product pages and hangtags.
bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER SINCE 2021
Signing on as a bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER in 2021 helped us take a closer look at our production values and implement guidelines to help ensure each step of a product’s lifecycle is held to rigorous third-party standards—from the environment to workers to you.

Then, Now and Looking Forward
Our first bluesign® PRODUCT, the Talon™ Earth 22, helped establish a more rigorous, holistic application of the bluesign® CRITERIA. Since its release, we've applied those standards to a growing list of bluesign® PRODUCTS across each category of our business. Look for the bluesign® PRODUCT logo on relevant product pages.
As we continue designing high-quality, innovative products for outdoor, travel and everyday use, we strive to reduce environmental impacts and produce sustainably designed products. bluesign is a key partner in that effort.
